Brad's Erotic Week - Introduction

Part 0Overview and Office (Wednesday)

Updated to Episode 6

Note
I have made the decision to stop updating this walkthrough (at least on this blog). There are two reasons for this, one practical, one personal.

The practical reason is that BEW has grown too complex for this format. Because of the number of ways in which the plot can branch there's a lot of jumping around the page, which makes it easy for the user to go off course. There are also a lot of places where it's easy to miss a point without it becoming apparent until much later. Given that the game is only 10% complete at this point, those problems are only going to get worse.

The personal reason is that I no longer have enough time. Writing a walkthrough for a new episode of BEW takes a lot longer than it does for an HTML dating game of similar size because of how much more complicated BEW is, not to mention that I often have to re-write what I've already written in order to accommodate new content. As a result, I doubt that I'll be able to do episode 7 in a timely fashion, let alone the 53 episodes that are scheduled to come after it.

However, I don’t want this walkthrough to die, so I’ve transferred it to a wiki (http://bradseroticweek.wikia.com) so that other people will be able to continue it if I don't. I've also taken the opportunity to change the structure of the walkthrough in an attempt to make it easier to follow.

Overview
Brad’s Erotic Week is an adult HTML game by Wolfschadowe. Due to its planned size, it is being released episodically (one episode every 3-6 months). The final game is intended to have three ‘seasons’, each consisting of approximately 20 episodes. It’s a mind-bogglingly ambitious project, and won’t be completed until August 2030 at the earliest.

This walkthrough will also be broken up into separate parts, but based on locations rather than individual episodes. For example, this part covers Brad’s first day at the office.

Episode 6 was released on 2 September 2016
Episode 5 was released on 28 December 2015.
Episode 4 was released on 29 September 2015.
Episode 3 was released on 8 June 2015.
Episodes 1 & 2 were released on 23 March 2015.

Plot
As the title suggests, Brad’s Erotic Week covers (or will cover, once it is complete) one week in the life of Brad (the PC). As the game opens, he is a lonely guy with a taste for voyeurism who has become obsessed with a woman he saw in a coffee shop.

Brad’s loneliness doesn’t last long though, as the other women in his life start making it known that they’re open to being more than friends (as long as the player doesn’t screw it up). There are four romance options in the base game, although one of them (Serenthia) has barely been implemented. Four more romance options are planned for inclusion, starting with Jasmine and Azumi, who have already been introduced in the game.

To keep this walkthrough at a manageable size, the focus will be on the paths that require the highest numbers of points (the so-called Elite paths). There are two kinds of Elite path. The Perfect paths are easy to understand as they require earning the maximum number of points with a particular girl or girls in order to win their affections. By contrast, the Corruption paths involve Brad ‘changing’ a single girl and getting them to give in to desires they are either unaware of or actively suppressing.

Other paths will be covered as space permits, with priority given to those paths that have unique content.

Difficulty
Brad’s Erotic Week has three difficulty levels. This walkthrough assumes that you are playing on Hard difficulty (which makes the most content available). If you are playing on Medium or Easy difficulty, your experience will vary from what is described here.

Scoring
There are two different kinds of points that can be earned in Brad's Erotic Week. The first kind affects Brad's score with all the characters, and is represented in this walkthrough as (+1). The second affects Brad's score with a single character, and is represented as (Faith +2), (Natalie +1) and so on.

These points totals are sometimes tested, which is represented in this walkthrough like this: (requires Emily 4) (Emily +2). In that example, your reputation with Emily is being tested. To succeed, it needs to be equal to or greater than 4 (on Hard, which is what this walkthrough assumes). If it is, your reputation with Emily is then increased by 2.

On Hard difficulty, to pass a relationship test you typically need at least 90% of the maximum number of points you could have potentially received up to that point. However, there are a handful of 'elite' tests that require a perfect score and these are noted at the beginning of each section of the walkthrough.

For the most part you will succeed at all these tests if you've been following the walkthrough. If you might fail, the conditions are described after the test within square brackets.

Branching
At certain points, the player will be directed to jump from one section of the walkthrough to another. Sometimes this is a direct continuation of the walkthrough, but more often it involves a choice between two or more different branches of the plot.

The choice will be described within [square brackets]. If the options are major branches, they will be underlined in the description, indicating the heading you should go to. If the options are just a brief detour from the main path, they will be listed as two (or more) separate blocks of text, with a heading in (parentheses) describing which choice each covers.

Finally, any meta-game information, such as Easter eggs or that this branch of the plot will be continued in an as yet unreleased episode, are enclosed in {braces}.

Saving
Brad’s Erotic Week allows the player to create multiple save games. It is strongly advised that you make use of this and save the game at major decision points. It is also advisable to name your saves descriptively, so that you can identify them later.

Note that clearing your browser cache and cookies will delete all your saves, so export them before doing so (and re-import them afterwards).

Achievements
Brad’s Erotic Week has an extensive (some would say excessive) achievement system. Most prominent are the achievements earned for performing major actions in the game. When one of these achievements is triggered, there will be a brief pop-up to notify the player. In the walkthrough, these achievements are noted as [Achievement: name].

There are also what might be called meta-achievements, which are earned for finding all of the possible endings to a scene, all of the minor actions in a scene, or for earning other achievements. Because of the sheer number of these meta-achievements, they are not comprehensively described in this walkthrough. They are listed at the beginning of each part, and where they are triggered they are noted as (Achievement #). However, in general, specific paths for triggering each meta-achievement will not be included in the walkthrough. This is unfortunately necessary to keep the size and the complexity of the walkthrough down to a manageable level.

Note that clearing your browser cache and cookies will wipe all your achievements, so export them first (and re-import them afterwards).

Bonus scenes
The sole reason to earn achievements (other than personal satisfaction) is for the bonus scenes, which become available when the player has triggered major meta-achievements.

As of Episode 6, there are two bonus scenes. Both are non-interactive and cover events outside of Brad’s personal observation. They also contain plot spoilers that you may wish to avoid.

1. Demo bonus scene – requires Demo Master {DM}
2. Wednesday bonus scene – requires Humpday Hooligan {d1}

Debug mode
Debug mode allows the player to view and change the game’s underlying variables. This includes changing your score with a particular character, or triggering hard to find achievements.

To make debug mode available, do the following:

1. Go to the Files directory within the main game directory

2. Make a backup copy of _game.js [This isn't absolutely necessary, as you can just re-download the game, but having a backup on hand is convenient if something goes wrong].

3. Open _game.js in a text editor [I prefer Notepad++, but plain old Notepad should be fine].

4. Search for the line 'var bewDebugMenuEnabled = !bewIsRelease;' (without quotes).

5. Change that line to 'var bewDebugMenuEnabled = true;' (without quotes), and save the file.

6. Open the game. There should be a new menu option called 'Debug Menu'. Click it.

7. Click 'Enable Debug Mode'. This will cause all the variables used in the game to be displayed in a series of tables beneath the main screen.

8. Each variable can be adjusted up or down during play by using the + and - next to it. Be cautious about doing this, as it could break the game.

9. Other options available in debug mode are 'Hotspots', which outlines the clickable areas on the screen, and 'Onclick Hints', which provides a pop-up tooltip showing the destination of the link and any variables it affects.

Walkthrough
At the beginning of each part of the walkthrough proper there will be a brief section listing the characters that appear in that part, any major decisions for the player to make, which achievements can be earned, and any general notes. Where necessary there will also be outlines of the various paths through the scene.

Characters
BEW begins with a non-interactive sequence that introduces both Brad Jenkins (the PC) and the woman he’s stalking. Her name is Serenthia, although Brad has yet to learn this, and she is the first of the romance options in the base game.

The game proper starts with a short office scene that introduces Emily Parker, Brad’s business partner. She handles the practical work required to keep NorthWest Video Forensics in business, and is the second of the romance options in the base game.

Decisions
There are two major decisions to make in this scene:

How does Brad treat Emily? This is more of a meta-decision, but if you Flirt With Emily (ie. pick all the options that increase Brad's score with her) she will go to the Oak Street Bar that evening (whether Brad is there or not). It is generally desirable to do this, even if you don’t want Brad to pursue a relationship with Emily, because it creates scoring opportunities on Day 2. The only reason to Ignore Emily (ie. only pick those options that increase Brad's global score so she won't go to the bar) is if you’re intending to pursue Faith on her own and don’t want Emily as a potential complication. Finally, Brad could be a Gentleman by not ogling Emily too blatantly. This behaviour has to be continued at the bar that evening, and thus far the only payoff is a small extra scene on the evening of Day 2.

Where does Brad go after work? This is possibly the most important choice in the game so far. If Brad goes to the bar he will meet Faith (and possibly Emily), making it the best choice if you intend to pursue either or both of those characters. If Brad goes to the strip club he will meet Natalie, making it the best choice if you intend to pursue her (or Azumi, who is a future romance option). Going to the strip club also makes some additional content involving Serenthia available on Day 2, so may be the best option if you hope to pursue her.

There are also two 'game over' paths that are required for achievements (Ending 1 and Ending 2), and a zero points path (Zero Points) that is required for an achievement in this scene and is also a prerequisite for an achievement in the strip club scene.

Achievements
A Long Day At The Office (complete the office scene) {donD1O}
Megabucks Coffee (play through the introduction) {int}
RTFM (read the instructions) {intIns}

  1. Wow, this will be a very massive walkthrough, and it's possible that after each releases you will need to add also in the parts already written (for example if you choose the strip club at some points you could be events different if Emily thought you to come at the bar or not).
I'm sure that many will appreciate this.

    1. I have the advantage of being one of the playtesters, so this walkthrough is based on what I wrote for my own testing. To save space I haven't listed most of the 'bad' endings.

I've tested some of the future episodes, and things do get a *lot* more complicated.

    2. I had to imagine that you were one of the playtesters, because you hadn't done a review on this game.
In any case if completed this will be a very massive game.

    1. There's a tic-tac-to game that can be brought up by clicking on the monitor at the end of the day (I've added it above).

Winning it should start an animation of Emily, standing up from her desk, but it doesn't work for me for some reason.

    2. Okay, I worked it out by looking at the code. How anyone was supposed to work it out otherwise is beyond me.

    1. There are three requirements:
      1. look up Emily's skirt
      2. kiss Emily's cheek (the achievement is actually triggered just before this, but it's a good signpost)
      3. get slapped by Emily after grabbing her breasts without it ending the game

I tried your text editing trick to be able to see the scores on hard with the new Episode 3 but it doesn't seem to be the same line as before. Can you confirm or am I just terrible? haha

    1. Are you playing the latest version (ie. Episode 3)? Pretty much the whole framework of the game got rewritten, so my advice above regarding editing is no longer valid.

I'll try and get this page updated as soon as possible.

    1. I've just tried version 1.4.5 and I can't see any difference in how the score is displayed on the various difficulty levels. That is, you can always see Brad's score with each girl.

So I'm not sure a fix is needed (and I don't think my js knowledge would be up to it anyway)

  10. Hi,
I was looking through the comments and found that there was a way to "way" to display the scores on hard mode. However, I was directed to this page and could not find the aforementioned "instructions". I am curious. Was it deleted?

    1. Love how the walkthrough is structured. You've done an amazing job making this game easier for us to play.
I'm curiuous about Wolf's comment about the third route through this scene. Do you know what Wolf means?

      Delete
    2. I'm sure I asked him about that comment when he made it, but I can't remember what his answer was. It didn't make me change the walkthrough in any case.

My conclusion (mainly based on looking at the files) is that the only thing that's important in the office scene is how many points you get with Emily. There are other variables that are tracked, but as far as I can tell they relate to continuity issues.

But (and this goes for the rest of the walkthrough as well) it's not impossible that I've either missed something, or a seemingly innocuous decision will turn out to have major effects somewhere down the line.

    5. If you're asking if you can see the bonus scenes without getting the achievements, then no, you can't. You can kind of read the text though if you look in _locale.en.js (toptext and option text is split up, but you should get the gist).

The easiest way would probably be to turn on debug mode (by editing _game.js) and manually activate the required achivements (although off the top of my head I can't remember which ones they are).

I should add that you're not missing much by not seeing the bonus scenes. They're basically there to flesh out the story by showing things from other people's viewpoints and hinting at what's going to happen. Nice, but not vital.

      Delete
    6. I have gotten the achievements, but I cant see the bonus scenes button.
Was just curious what they were, if they are nothing special then i wont bother with it anymore.
      Thank you!

      Delete
    7. If you do have the achievements and the button isn't showing then that's a bug and you should log it.

What browser you use shouldn't matter, although the achivement data is browser specific (eg. if you've been using Firefox but then switch to Chrome your achievements won't carry over unless you export them from the old browser and import them into the new one).

You might also want to double check that you have the achievements (I think it's 'Humpday Hooligan' and 'Demo Master'), especially if you ever clean out your browser cache.

      Delete
    8. As an addendum to this, starting from Episode 6 I will not be comprehensively covering achievements (not that I was before, but I was trying to).

As I mention in the overview, this is down to the fact that trying to describe how all of the achievements are triggered makes the main walkthrough more difficult to follow (not to mention my personal dislike of the achievement system)
